Hey! Today, I’m going to talk about Lizzy McAlpine.

I first found Lizzy McAlpine when I added her song “Over the Ocean Call” from a playlist.I didn’t really listen to any of her other music until I saw her cover of “Paranoia Purple” by Yebba in 2022 on a YouTube channel called stories. This cover really helped to kickstart my obsession.

I then listened to all of her music that she had put out, which was her first album and EP, and a bunch of singles, most of those being with other artists.

Her music really clicked with me, especially her first album, Give Me a Minute, because it’s the perfect mix of acoustic and folky, both of which I love. She keeps that acoustic sound with her first EP, When the World Stopped Moving: The Live EP, and then gets a little more pop-y with the second album, five seconds flat.

I think one of the reasons I love all three is because she keeps her overall sound the same, being authentic and honest in everything she releases.

So, Lizzy Mcalpine’s career has really started to pick up recently. What’s most obvious would be her song “ceilings” becoming viral on TikTok. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, there was a trend where people would start running theatrically to a sped-up version of “ceilings”.

But, even before the “ceilings” trend, Lizzy had been collaborating with big-name artists like John Mayer, Jacob Collier, Finneas, and Darren Criss. She was also on talk shows such as The Tonight Show, Ellen, and Jimmy Kimmel.

She had also done an NPR tiny desk performance and numerous collaborations with stories and Scary Pockets, which are both made by the same team, whereas Scary Pockets came first and releases Funk covers, and stories releases acoustic covers. Both are really cool and feature some amazing artists.

Where I Would Start:

So, now that I’ve listened to almost everything that Lizzy’s put out, I’m going to show you where I would start listening if I were you. And just a reminder, I made a playlist that’s available on Spotify where you can listen to all the songs I suggest, plus more of my favorites. It’s linked below!

ceilings

So, I would probably start with “ceilings”, just so, that if you know the trend and have heard the song, you can listen to it while knowing a little more about Lizzy, not just the trend. Also, it’s just a really good song. It’s got a plot twist at the end that gives the song a whole new meaning, which I love.

Apple Pie

There are just certain songs that give you a warm fuzzy feeling, and “Apple Pie” is definitely one of them. The production is simple, yet complements her voice and the meaning of the song so wonderfully. And the harmonies. *chef’s kiss*

all my ghosts

I love the idea of this song, that the “ghosts” from her past are tagging along while she’s spending time with her significant other. They’re there right until the end when she lets go of the past and her “ghosts”. I think the bridge is where this song really shines, though. It’s so fun, and not only is it a belt-worthy bridge, but it also ties the whole song together.

Paranoia Purple

As I said, this is the song that introduced me to Lizzy McAlpine. This is a song that not anyone can sing, and she sang it so well. Her voice shines so bright in this song, it’s like the instruments are playing to her singing, not the other way around.

orange show speedway

This song is fun and reminiscent. It’s about the point in a breakup where she’s not that sad anymore, but remembering when she fell in love. The first song on her album, five seconds flat, is “Doomsday”, which talks about how her breakup was the end of the world for her. “Orange show speedway” is the last song, and it shows how much she has healed from the relationship. Also, I’m a sucker for a mention of the album title in a song.
