So, I’ve been seeing these videos pop up on social media of these people doing improv, either by singing or on a stage. I would laugh at it, but not really look into it.

But, after about the 10th time a Musical Monday video popped up, I decided to look into it. And then watch all of them I can. So, thanks Instagram algorithm, I’m obsessed!

So, ImprovBroadway, according to their bio, is the world’s first and only improv comedy theater in Provo, Utah. It’s also family friendly!

And I know what you’re thinking. Improv? Really? Isn’t that kinda cheesy? Um, yes. And that’s what makes it hilarious. People literally thinking up funny things on the spot makes for the most outlandish humor with no time to second guess.

ImprovBroadway consists of a group of people putting on a show that is full improvisation every Friday and Saturday night. According to Dry Bar Comedy, “With an improvised blend of musical theater, comedy, storytelling, and audience participation, this series is as innovative and hilarious as it gets.”

But today I’m mostly going to be talking about Musical Monday, because that’s what I’m hooked on at the moment.

What happens in Musical Monday is Zach Atherton and Shae McCombs, both part of ImprovBroadway, make up a musical on the spot. I believe they come in with an idea of the name of the musical, but everything after that is spontaneous.

They start creating the story and thinking up the plot line, and this leads to them coming up with the name of a song. When that happens, the pianist, Caleb Wall, starts playing something on the keyboard. What comes next is magic.

Zach and Shae start singing a song that hasn’t been written to music that they’ve never heard before. And it’s so good! And they sound great!

Then, they do it again. They create new depth to the story, most of the time with a million plot twists, and then lead the scenes they create into a song.

And the delusional part of my brain says, “Wow, that would be so fun. I bet I could do that!” But I most definitely couldn’t. It’s crazy the stuff they make up on the fly, while also trying to see where the music is going. Insane. It usually gets so off track from where it started, and that makes for an incredibly entertaining and hilarious show.

You should definitely check them out on YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, Instagram, or whatever social media you like.

My favorites so far are “The Lonely Journal Keeper: The Musical”, “Man I Love The West: The Musical”, and “Duke Delish: The Bridgerton-Inspired Musical”.

Also, check out the shows that ImprovBroadway does. They have improv comedy specials that are free to watch online. I’ll put the Linktree for ImprovBroadway below which will take you to everything I’ve talked about, along with the YouTube playlist for Musical Monday. And if you’re in Provo, Utah, incite my jealousy and go see a show in person!
